Wonk Unit’s Nervous Racehorse on Vinyl

We have already released Wonk Unit’s first 3 albums on vinyl. You will not be surprised that we are now releasing their fourth album ‘Nervous Racehorse’ on vinyl. This is the first Wonk Unit album we released back in March 2014. Our copies of the splatter won’t be around for long so don’t hang about! Pre-order the record here.

Discussing the album, Alex from Won Unit said this was a “big watershed moment in the life of Wonk Unit was Nervous Racehorse. So there we were, minding our own business when those nice people from TNS asked if we wanted to release our 4th record with them. And didn’t it just bring us to a wider audience and expand our Northern family. Yes it did! Racehorse was Muffy on steroids. Some classic tunes on this one. Go Easy, Lewisham, Nan, Nagging wife. The list goes on. Racehorse was the album when we perfected the Wonk formula and when hit our stride.”

Wonk Unit are one of the most unique bands in punk rock today, with an incredibly eclectic mix of sounds, which it would impossible to describe; you just need to hear it. The almost poetry driven vocal style adds to the band’s originality. The catchy melodies are so memorable that you will be singing along for days.

“Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?

Well, you should if you are ignorant of the air, leanings and grandeur of Wonk Unit, London’s improbable heroes. Heroes of community, of politics and melody.

Champions of Wonkfest, the ever growing London festival that is key to the punk rock calendar. Yes, punk rock. Individual, ironic, poignant and occasionally wistful, Wonk Unit deliver “Mr Splashy” in your ears and it resonates in a contemporary way, legitimizing the mantra of “21st century punks”.
My mate Sean brought home the latest Descendents effort on vinyl recently and spun a few tunes. My reaction?“This sounds like Wonk Unit”. Case closed.

Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated? Honk If You Wonk.”

Wonk Unit – Trolleys Thank You/ Wonk Unit Saved My Life

Here is what Alex has to say about the album:

So we’d released  Flying the Japanese Flag and it was an album of such rage and technical songwriting that  i wasn’t sure i was ever gonna be able to equal the quality of it. Songwriting was new to me back then, i had no idea if the previous album was a fluke or not.

I’d recently moved to Los Angeles so Wonk was kinda on a hiatus. The line up of Jap Flag had kinda disbanded whilst i was away so on my return and after seeing Snuff’s Duncan Redmonds standing in on drums for Leatherface, i approached him about doing a few drum sessions for us. 4 sessions later and Trolleys Thank You was born. A melancholy mix of brand new and old songs dating back to when The Flying Medallions broke up. Having Duncan join us for this record was literally a dream come true. Snuff were the soundtrack to my youth and Duncan is a total hero of mine! I was and still am beyond stoked that he’s part of this record! He is a wonderful silly chap and friend.x

The whole record is essentially 2 ep’s. The B side ,”Wonk Unit saved my life” features Adam Stone (From The Apostates) on drum duties. Adam like me is a recovering alcoholic and was in a bad way when he first joined the Wonk .It was nice to have him join me on the wagon and have a fellow brother of sobriety to share our day to day struggles with haha .He turned up one day with “Wonk Unit saved my life” inked on his stomach so that became the name of the B side.

I recently wrote out the lyrics for the sleeve notes. Total misery! hahahaha I assure you, life was quite happy when this record was produced though!

On a final note, the title to Trolleys and how it came about is worth mentioning. A photographer girlfriend of mine used to go out in the middle of the night with her mates drinking cans of cider, smoking fags, getting naked and then do crazy photo shoots of them in weird inapproapriate places. Sitting on traffic bollards in the middle of the high streets, crossing zebra crossings, on swings in parks. One of the pics was of them sitting in a shopping trolley in a bay under a Sainsbury’s sign saying Trolleys Thank you.The pic was so obscure and cool but alas, her famous photographer of a brother took offence of his sisters wild antics so the picture was pulled at the last minute. The cover photo of me in the lift was taken on route to Sainsbury’s to recreate the original but we ended up using the lift shot. x

The album is available on both translucent green and black. Don’t hang about if you want the green version! The album will come with a download code.

Pressing:
Green – 97
Black – 220

Wonkfest

If you haven’t check out Wonkfest before. Well you should. This year’s festival, on 25th July, in London, will be amazing. We have asked Alex from the awesome TNS band Wonk Unit to tell you all about it. This is what he has to say:

———————–

Hi TNSrecords family! My name is Alex from the band Wonk Unit.

Once a year at the end of July we put on a crazy gig in London that we call Wonkfest. The bands that fit the criteria for this are the ones that have been important to us throughout our year of touring. The bands that put us on in the cities across the UK, the bands that have supported us, the bands with a similar ethos to the Wonk (ie folk that embrace diversity, tolerance, folk that smile and have respect for ones neighbours.).

We are looking to the future. We want the new blood. The leaders of the pack. the scene creators. The folk that get off their asses and do stuff for themselves. These are the bands that play Wonkfest.

Wonk Unit supporting Slaves

We embrace the aspect of community. We encourage everyone to bring a plate of food for a massive buffet! Everyone gets fed. Everyone meets new friends, some lucky devils get laid. It’s chilled, it’s friendly.

Bands not known in London get to play to a new fanbase who really appreciate the chance to see bands from afar. It works! These aren’t the bands you’ll see on your usual punk rock line ups. These aren’t the bands with the PR companies that you get pushed down your throat in magazines. These are THE REAL BANDS! The bands doing it in the UK right now in 2015. The bands you’ll probably see on the telly in a couple years time. PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARTY!!!!! XXXX

So if that hasn’t convinced you, what is wrong? OK, check out this documentary from last year’s festival:

Wonk Unit Je M'appelle

Wonk Unit: New Single and Video

Have we got a treat for you? Everyone loves Wonk Unit so that would be a yes. We are kicking your week off with a new Wonk Unit video, which will be available for free download on 6th May.
Channelling a healthy dose of punk rock cynicism and bitter irony Wonk Unit unleash another 3 minute melodic pop-punk classic with new single “Je M’ appelle Alex,” released 6th May, Rising Phoenix-like from The Flying Medallions (AKA “the best live band on the planet”) Wonk Unit have attained an almost mythological status in the UK underground, having played easily over 500 UK club shows and touring Europe many times, getting substantial attention in the underground press and BBC Radio 1 airplay.
“One of the most unique bands in modern punk rock. Wonk Unit are a fresh breath of life in the London punk scene. They’re fun, weird, poetic and utterly compelling all at once, a must-see.Art Rocker
Front man Alex Brindle-Johnson is a modern day renaissance man, a plasterer by trade, he is also published author – having written a book during his commute to and from various London building sites. His poetry even saw him being invited to open the London leg of the international LitCrawl festival in 2013.
Alex first came across Slaves in 2012 and on hearing their Sugar Coated Bitter Truth EP immediately recognized a spark and similar mentality in the young duo. Within weeks they were on their first UK tour supporting Wonk on their “Muffy” album. Since then the two bands have played countless shows together, culminating on 6th & 7th May at London’s Scala for two nights of punk rock celebratory mayhem in the capital.
“Wonk Unit are arguably the future of punk rock; I fully accept that that’s a bold statement, but having had ‘Nervous Racehorse’, the fourth full length album from the London outfit on rotation for the past week I feel they entirely justify the claim…” Louder Than War

Je M’appelle Alex is the first single to be taken from the upcoming Mr Splashy album due for release in early 2016 on TNSrecords. Wonk Unit and TNS are a perfect fit – Manchesters TNS records have been putting out cutting edge independent punk rock music since 2008 and have had releases by bands such as Revenge of The Psychotronic Man, Vanilla Pod, Roughneck Riot, Beat The Red Light, Stand Out Riot and Bootscraper
“[Wonk Unit] have managed the almost impossible task of having found their own sound. It’s punk son, but not as we know it”Big Cheese

Wonk play rebellion, 3 chords and fest this year as well as support slots with teenage bottle rocket. Wonk unit’s own festival “wonkfest” is on July 25th this year at London’s dome in Tufnell Park.
