James Domestic's Carrion Repeating

If you’ve had any interest in UK hardcore/punk over the past decade you’ll probably know James Domestic from many bands: THE DOMESTICS, who have blazed across Europe several times, plus PI$$ER, TOKYO LUNGS, and half a dozen others. This, however, is a very different beast!

Material produced under the JAMES DOMESTIC banner blends post-punk, Krautrock, psychedelia, soul, funk, reggae, and punk, frequently utilising repetition as a bedrock for hook-laden gems. James nestles in that nook of singular British pop where MADNESS, IAN and BAXTER DURY, MARK E. SMITH, KEVIN ROWLAND, IVOR CUTLER, ROOTS MANUVA, BILLY CHILDISH, JOHN COOPER CLARKE, JONA LEWIE, ANDY PARTRIDGE, ROBERT WYATT, and SLEAFORD MODS reside. Add some KING TUBBY, FLIPPER and ESG, and you’re probably pressing your nose against the right window.

‘Mañana‘, the third single from ‘Carrion Repeating‘ is streaming everywhere today. This time it’s low-slung, chugging garage-punk with dub sirens, saxophone, steel drums and the vocal return of Clare Gillet from the Push on Through single. All of this sounds like it’d be an unbearable mess, but somehow it comes together effortlessly into a great four minute pop song, evoking the spirit of a lo-fi, garage rock version of British pop-heroes, MADNESS, in its inventive way with a catchy hook and unconventional mix of instruments.

A paean to taking your foot off the gas and letting things slide, or a warning of the perils of procrastination, perhaps? It’s hard to tell whether Mañana is meant to serve as a confessional regarding Domestic’s own perceived lack of willpower, or a celebration of idleness.  It could be either of these things; and that’s one of its many joys.
